Our Studio

Hi friend!

We’re LAGOM STUDIOS a locally-owned, cozy holistic Pilates studio in the Fauntleroy neighborhood of West Seattle.

Inspired by the Swedish philosophy of Lagom, the art of living a balanced and appreciative life, we believe in supporting the mind, body, and spirit as part of our Pilates practice.

Through group intimate reformer classes of up to 4 people, individual private and duet sessions, Reiki energy healing, and varied community events, we offer a safe and uplifting community space for all to feel cozy in.

Lagom (pronounced law-gom) is a Swedish word meaning, “Not too little, not too much just right”.

Not too little. Not too much. Just Right.

Hi, I’m the studio owner, Melina! Let me share a bit about the inspiration behind the studio name.

Why Lagom?

Growing up in a tight-knit Scandinavian family on Marrowstone Island, I learned the art of Lagom from my Swedish Mormor.

During my Pilates training, my instructor trainers kept saying that everything had to be “just right”, or to move something “not too little, not too much”. If you moved outside of this tiny threshold, you would no longer be engaging those tiny stabilizing muscles, and everything would be off balance. I had a light bulb moment and realized that Pilates is an embodied practice of Lagom. Each movement emphasizes the importance of just the right amount of breath, alignment, and mindful movement. I like to think of Pilates as a moving meditation. The more you’re able to quite your mind, the more you can feel your body in space, and listen to what it needs.

As I went through some truly dark periods in life, I came to appreciate Lagom as a way to ground into the present moment and be grateful for the little things. It became a way to honor my body, mind, and soul with what I truly needed in the moment. I no longer deprived myself with how I thought I should be living, nor did I continue to overindulge with food or exercise out of fear or unworthiness. I learned to live a life full of intention, appreciation, and adventure. (That’s me in Patagonia last year!)

My hope is for this philosophy of Lagom to inspire you to live a balanced, appreciative, and truly joyful life.

Kind Words:

  • Melina is the pilates instructor of my dreams. She is patient, kind, gentle, and nurturing. I highly recommend her studio especially for those of us who are returning to physical fitness after injury, health issues, and surgery. She's created a collaborative and peaceful space and I'm so grateful for her expertise.

  • I’m so grateful to have found Lagom soon after I moved to West Seattle! Melina has created a genuinely welcoming and supportive environment and community. I’ve been doing private Pilates sessions with the amazing LouBee for both ongoing health and wellness as well as for an acute injury. It has been a game changer for me, and I look forward to and value each of our sessions.
I also love the variety of offerings at Lagom, and I’ve enjoyed every event I’ve attended.

  • My flexibility, strength, and posture have never been better. Instructors are very attentive to body position and movement patterns. I consider Stott Pilates to be like a combination of physical therapy, strength training and yoga. Class sizes of four people or less is amazing.

  • I am new to LAGOM STUDIOS & felt immediately welcome by Melina. She is fun, friendly, & knowledgeable. The studio is clean & fresh, with her artistic touch as well. She has a lot of athletic & creative experience. I recently had knee replacement surgery & she is very mindful of my limitations, while still giving me a great workout. I couldn’t be happier!

  • I had been taking Pilates at the Innate Vitality location for over a year when it was announced that Melina was taking the business over. The transition was pretty seamless! I have been to three classes taught by Melina and every time we have done something new. She has a very good awareness of the body and the small things to do and activate to support or bring ease to hard sequences. She is also a positive person and is fun to be around! I would highly recommend coming here.

  • Melina is a wonderful instructor and just overall great human to be around. I’ve never even thought about taking a Pilates class until the other day and I’m so happy I went today. I really appreciate the small classes since I’m so introverted, it made for a very comfortable environment. It smells fresh and clean and you are surrounded by beautiful crystals. I have been suffering from some lower back pain and I’m just the one session, the pain has somewhat subsided. I will definitely be going back.

  • My overall well-being has greatly improved since starting Pilates at LAGOM STUDIOS last year. Can I sit and stand comfortably without being in pain? Yes! Am I stronger? Yes! Am I more flexible? It’s still a work in progress, but it has improved! But most importantly, LAGOM STUDIOS provides a community I can count on every time I walk into the studio. Every instructor I take classes from, especially Melina and LouBee, make the effort to get to know me and they are some of the most genuine people I’ve encountered. I started coming to Pilates to get more active, but I’m staying for the sense of belonging and if my muscles look toned and defined in the process, it’s more of an incentive to continue enrolling in classes :)

  • Lagom Studios is an excellent Pilates studio with high quality instructors and great energy always. Melina, the owner, is a lovely person and a great teacher. I go to class to keep my body out of PT and leave feeling like I’ve just had a great massage with my muscles warmed up and stretched out. I used to go off the island to find quality Pilates instruction—we are lucky to have this gem in our West Seattle neighborhood.

  • Melina is the best! She customizes workouts to everyone’s abilities and makes them feel welcomed. She truly is a gem and encourages me to be stronger. I look forward to her classes.
